The Gladstonian Journal

THE MILLINERY EDITION
featuring Justin Smith of J Smith Esquire

CRAFTSMANSHIP

My brand ‘J Smith Esquire’ upholds the traditions of millinery, whilst redefining classic headwear, challenging conventions and technique alike. Whether I’m delivering a bespoke service to discerning clientele, creating art installations or designing unique headwear for film, I stand for quality craftsmanship, luxury materials and impeccable finishing touches. So naturally I was drawn to the Gladstone bags as they too believe in a similar aesthetic and quality craftsmanship.

STYLE

Whilst I constantly take inspiration from the world around me, a designer that has influenced me for years is Yohji Yamamoto. I consistently love his choices and deceptively simple, yet bold designs. There are always pieces in Yohji’s collection that elegantly fit the J. Smith Esquire aesthetic. Hence, why they were the logical collaborative partner to my headwear on the photo-shoot of my latest collection ‘Gold’.

GEAR

The G23 holds my daily gear and sits so well that I hardly notice it as I’m negotiating London’s alleyways and backstreets…except when people stop me to ask where I got such a cool backpack!
It feels great wearing it when I cycle to yoga early in the morning. It is super-stylish and follows all that I appreciate in design; the bag is elegant, traditional and simply fantastic!

TRAVEL

During my research, I get to immerse myself in the aesthetics of the planet’s diverse traditions. I plan to travel the length of Japan next year; it’s a culture that has always fascinated me and I am inspired by the people’s sensibility. I am drawn to traditional, and tranquil places that inspire the senses through combining human artistry with natural elements in harmonious and spiritual ways.

GROOMING

My career begun as a hair stylist, which in turn led me to setting up my own salon, where; as I regard them to be the best, I would always use Kevin Murphy products. Personally, I’ve been enjoying Santa Maria Novella’s special quality products since I came across their gorgeous shop. Being one of the oldest pharmacists in the world, I love that is was originally selling remedies made by Dominican friars.

LONDON

One of my favourite places in London is Hampstead Heath, and my dog would certainly agree. When possible I go to the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market there for their delicious local produce. In the early hours of the morning, I enjoy the experience of getting great bunches of flowers from New Covent Garden Market.
